Couples Therapy

Perhaps you are married, engaged, or in a serious dating relationship and experiencing difficulties. These difficulties might be with communication, trust, intimacy (physical or emotional), anger, or something else.  Maybe there has been infidelity and you are trying to figure out how to heal.  Maybe things have gotten so bad that you're afraid they can't be fixed.  If you come to my practice, I will work with you and your partner to help you to figure out the cause of your difficulties and build toward a communicative, caring, and mutually satisfying relationship.

Happy, loving couple, free of relationship difficulties

Often when a couple comes to my practice, they bring with them rigid ways of interacting and learned patterns of behavior that can be difficult to diffuse.  These learned patterns might pre-date the relationship and have started during previous romantic relationships or even in your family of origin.  In couples therapy, we would examine these patterns and behaviors in order to understand their causes and the function they serve within your current relationship.  Core to the process will be working on your and your partner's communication so that you can begin to understand each other better and develop shared meaning.  I will work with you on creating an atmosphere that is free of judgement and blame where the goal is to bring you and your partner closer together and help you accept each other for who you are.

Couples therapy is a process and change tends to occur over time.  The negative feelings and arguments that you experience at home might come out during our sessions, especially at the beginning of treatment.  Things will likely need to be discussed repeatedly before they are fully taken in and change begins to take shape.  However, when at the foundation of our treatment is the love that you and your partner have for each other, I have a lot of optimism regarding the potential for growth and healing that can occur in even the most contentious of relationships.  When you come to see me for couples therapy, you will have a caring, kind, and unbiased collaborator who will work hard to help you and your partner find solutions to the difficulties that are occurring in your relationship.

If you have any questions about couples therapy, please feel free to contact me or schedule a consultation.
